How to get started writing

Ok, so your instructor/teacher/boss has assigned a writing assignment and you know you have to get started, but its sooooo hard to get started and you really don’t like to write and it takes up so much time. But, here’s what I want to tell you…

You know that you have to do it eventually or suffer negative consequences in terms of low grades, missed deadlines, or loss of work, so, the question is, why do you want to do that to yourself? You know that all you have to do is a crappy first draft, a few  pages with some kind of purpose. Spelling doesn’t count. Grammar doesn’t count. All that counts is that you get started and put your thoughts on paper. So, here’s what I’m going to suggest to you, and before you say anything let me just say this…I know any kind of prewriting takes time, and the reason you are avoiding writing to begin with is because you don’t want to write, period, so the idea of MORE writing seems ludicrous. BUT, as Chef Ramsey would say, “Let’s get one thing right!” Pre writing (doing a 5 minute free write where you write down everything you can think of about a topic) will loosen up your brain, provide you with a ton of ideas and ultimately SAVE you time in the long run. In fact, I often start freewriting when I am assigned something, and the freewrite becomes the actual assignment. I cut of the first page and often find the essay I was searching for, along with a thesis or two to explore, in the pages that follow! So much better than staring off into space and hoping inspiration comes to you. l
